Why these categories take longer

For most retail categories, the retailer confirms the sale within a few days of purchase: the item ships, the return window passes, the network pays the commission. For travel, insurance and subscriptions, "the sale" isn't really complete until weeks or months later:

  • Travel (flights, hotels, holiday packages): The retailer waits until you've actually travelled, because cancellations, no-shows and date changes are common right up to the day of departure.
  • Insurance (health, car, home, travel insurance): Most policies have a 14-30 day cooling-off period during which you can cancel for a full refund. Affiliate commission is only paid after that window closes.
  • Subscriptions (software, streaming, meal kits, mobile plans): Many have a free trial or money-back guarantee period of 7-30 days. Some — especially telco plans — wait until the customer has paid two or three monthly invoices before treating the sale as confirmed.
